Flexible Visual System & Digital Learning Platform

visual identity, ux/ui, illustration, signage, motion, data visualization, generative tools
C4R Community for Rigor is a free, open resource to learn, practice, and promote scientific rigor. We were tasked in designing a flexible visual system and digital learning platform, centered around their beloved mascot, the Rigorous Raven.
Our challenge was to design a mascot to highlight the many moods of C4R’s users—to illustarte the full spectrum of feelings that come with practicing science. Part of delivering a new mascot involved creating Figma design toolkits, comprised of Raven body components and designs, to allow the C4R team to build their own variations.

We designed a modular typo/graphic grid system to serve as the foundation for C4R’s Visual System, allowing us to take a generative approach in both our design process and the production of assets, from UX/UI and digital assets to print collatral and signage.

We delivered an extensive Brand Guidelines System in the form of toolkits and a creative manual outlining their visual and verbal identities. Like any other system of standards, we created this document as a tool for productivity, efficiency, and consistency, serving as a guide for the development and execution of all their brand expression—from the content they create to the social comments they make, from the placement of their logo to the mood of their Raven. But: as detailed and reliable as the doc is, it’s neither comprehensive nor fixed—and it never will be. It is meant to evolve with the world C4R lives in and the community they represent.

McGill University

VISUAL SYSTEMSvisual identity, illustration, motion, ux/ui, data visualization
The Open Brain is an open access, neuroscience learning tool (i.e. the natural evolution of a textbook), designed for The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) at McGill University.
We designed and built the first complete chapter of The Open Brain Textbook, presenting a prototype of the project’s interactive learning and reading experience. Features explored and developed for this first chapter include interactive graphics and exercises built out of a modular icon system, text annotation via highlighting and note taking, video simulations, quizzes, superscripts, footnotes and downloads.
